Apple is testing two-step verification for iCloud.com

Over a year after rolling out two-step verification for Apple ID accounts, Apple has added the process for some users of its iCloud.com Web apps, according to AppleInsider. The new setup places a lock icon over all iCloud apps except Find My iPhone, assuming that you already have two-factor authentication in place. You’ll need to get the four-digit verification code from an approved device in order to unlock apps like Mail, Pages and Calendar. We’ve reached out to Apple to ask whether it plans to make this available to all accounts. ➤ Apple rolls out two-step verification for iCloud.com Web...

Following acquisition by Nokia HERE, Desti to shut down on September 3

When HERE, Nokia’s mapping division, acquired personalized travel planning app Desti in late May, the company said it would shut down the app in about 90 days. True to its word, Desti has notified users that the app will take a long sleep starting on September 3. After that date, you won’t be able to search or access saved trips from within the app. Desti recommends that users share itineraries with themselves and other travel buddies in order to save them. Like Siri and Nuance, Desti emerged as a spin-off of the SRI International research institute. Nokia plans to integrate...

Learning something new? Remember these 3 simple things

vintage cameras

This post originally appeared on the Crew blog. I did it. I bought the sewing machine, a dress form, a table—everything. I’m going to teach myself how to sew. The only problem? I have no idea where to start. I’m the person that buys the new thing and immediately dives into the most difficult possible project. This is usually followed by immense frustration and sometime after that—quitting. Well, not this time. This time I’m going to do it right. In order to do that, I wanted to understand a bit more about what I can do to promote the best...

Infinit and beyond: This could become the ultimate file-sharing desktop app for creatives

creative thinking

Back in November, we brought you news on Infinit, which we called a fast, unlimited file-transfer desktop app for creatives. Then, Infinit was a Mac-only desktop app in (public) beta. But as of last month, Infinit is a fully launched product with a Windows app to boot, though the latter remains in beta for now pending some design polish. Oh, and the Paris-based company now has $1.8 million in funding under its belt too. A lot has changed across the board since we covered the early version, so here we take a quick look at what’s what under the hood....

14 of the best new iOS apps from June

From ambient audio-sharing apps to free, unlimited storage for all your mobile photos, we covered a lot of ground with new iOS apps in June. So by way of a quick recap and, of course, to help you filter through the debris, here’s our pick of the newbies from the past month. OverHeard OverHeard is a fiendishly simple sound-sharing app that wants to do for audio what Vine did for video. It ambiently records and preserves up to three minutes of sound wherever you are, then starts again, deleting the previous audio segment in the process. The upshot? You always...

It’s probably every developer’s worst nightmare, but if you work for the BBC, such mishaps tend to get seen by a lot more people. The British broadcaster has a breaking news feature within its mobile News app, and you probably received some interesting ‘Breaking News’ earlier if you have the app installed on Android or iOS. Apparently, ‘Push sucks’ and ‘Pull blows, and there will be no nudity in the next episode of Game of Thrones. Interesting test of push notifications from @BBCNews just now #pushsuckspullblows http://ift.tt/1laN9C9 — Julian March (@JulianMarch) June 25, 2014 As well as issuing a follow-up...

Twitter Goes Public On The New York Stock Exchange

Twitter appears to be testing a dedicated WhatsApp share button inside its mobile apps. A number of screenshots, mostly from users in India, were tweeted earlier today showing the experimental feature running inside the company’s Android app. In some instances it can be seen at the top of the screen, next to the search icon. In others, it’s located next to the existing share button underneath the tweet itself. Normally, you would need to tap the generic share button to quickly post a tweet on Facebook, WhatsApp, or any other connected Android app. Back in April, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum...

The deal runs until July 31 and can’t be combined with other offers. Since the base Surface Pro 3 starts at $799, you’ll still have to shell out at least $150 to make the switch. Facebook’s News Feed ranking algorithm now considers how long you watch videos

Facebook announced today changes to the video ranking algorithm for News Feed. From now on, the company will include whether video clips uploaded to personal accounts and Pages are watched and how long they’re watched when it calculates whether to show the content to others. As a result, users that tend to watch more frequently will have more videos surfaced in their feed. If you regularly skip over video uploads, you’ll start seeing them less. Other factors that Facebook looks at when ranking video posts include comments, likes and shares. Links to third-party video sites won’t be affected by the...

Recent revelations that Android may be developing a competitor to Apple’s iBeacon have resparked conversations about the right and wrong ways to track devices and their users. Generally speaking, people simply don’t like the idea of companies tracking their location, nor their phones automatically activating various sensors just because they happen to be in the general vicinity of another device’s sensors. ‘Entrepreneur in Residence’ (EIR) is the tech community’s newest job title. They’re popping up at Fortune 500 companies like Dell and venture firms like Greylock Partners to introduce a lens into the changing innovation landscape. “EIRs are the new ambassadors for investors and large organizations,” says Ellie Cachette, a seasoned entrepreneur, product designer and consultant for enterprise brands. The value proposition makes sense. Entrepreneurs who – by definition – pursue the road less traveled, can introduce organization to new business models, technologies, and and strategic partnership opportunities. EIRs build bridges into the startup community. A symbiotic relationship EIRs come from...

Microsoft is retiring older versions of Skype for Windows and Mac, wants you to update today

If you haven’t already upgraded to the latest versions of Skype’s desktop apps, you might want to soon. The Microsoft-owned VoIP service has announced that it’s going to “retire” older versions of Skype for Windows (6.13 and under ) and Mac (6.14 and under) in the coming months. The software giant has introduced a number of significant updates to Skype this year, including cross-platform message-syncing, and free group video calls, so it’s worthwhile upgrading anyway. While it’s not clear exactly what ‘retiring’ means, in terms of whether it will simply stop working or will just no longer be supported, Microsoft...

Following an extended open beta period, Israel-based Syntomo has now officially launched MailWise to the masses, promising “an innovative approach to tackling the complex and disorganized experience of emailing via the mobile phone.” Sounds ace. We’ve given it a bit of a spin, and it’s definitely nicely designed and could easily become your default all-encompassing email client, though we’re not convinced it brings that much innovation to the table beyond...
