Following a ruling from the US Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court on Monday, the National Security Agency (NSA) is set to resume its bulk data collection program, which allows it to store and analyze data about American citizens’ phone calls. The Freedom Act — signed on June 1 after section 215 of the Patriot Act expired — allows the NSA to continue to collect phone call metadata during a transition phase of 180 days. The agency is expected to switch to a new system for obtaining call records from phone companies at the end of this period. The decision to allow the…

Beats 1 is down, and there’s no explanation for it

Beats1DownTNW
Beats 1 is down. When launched in Apple Music, Beats 1 gives a mysterious error code that simply says the radio station can’t be launched. Other stations on Apple Music seem unaffected. There’s no explanation given for the downtime, either. Apple has yet to address the problem, and there are no details provided with the error code. It’s not clear how widespread the outage is. The radio station that aims to bring personality back to streaming music is actually really nice. Apple Music, launched earlier today for iOS, lacked a desktop component. There was also the confusing issue of iCloud music library streaming and iTunes Match, but that’s been resolved as iTunes 12.2 is rolling out to users now. The revamped iTunes mimics Apple Music in many ways when you’re in the Music section. Buttons along the top now show Radio, For You, Connect and New by default. The layout within those buttons is just like the mobile version, too. When an album is selected, the drop-down menu showing the tracks within looks just like the album screen in the Apple…

shutterstock_253372846
Though they’ve held out longer than most would (and have), rock band AC/DC will reportedly make all its tracks available for streaming tomorrow. When the band released albums to iTunes in 2012, guitarist and founding member of the band Angus Young said the band preferred its albums be heard in full, not split up. AC/DC tracks will reportedly find their way to Spotify, Rdio and Apple Music. No…
