Inside App Links, Facebook’s open-source effort to make mobile apps more like the Web

0430_mailbox

Earlier today at F8 2014, Facebook unveiled App Links, a new open standard for deep linking across different mobile apps. The official App Links website has yet to go live, but it will eventually be located at AppLinks.org. Mobile apps are the future, but, up until now, the increasingly siloed nature of the ecosystem has been its biggest weakness. The interconnectedness of the Web – its webbiness – helps keep it open and serendipitous as we jump from page to page. The mobile platforms themselves have tried to implement deep-linking into their own products, but Facebook believes it’s in a...

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo: A ‘whisper mode’ would encourage friends to privately discuss public conversations

Twitter Goes Public On The New York Stock Exchange

Twitter is looking to encourage more private discussions on its service. CEO Dick Costolo would like to have a “whisper mode” that allows users to take public conversations and discuss them solely with friends, according to a video interview with Bloomberg. While the social network is public-first, meaning content is shared with everyone by default (unlike Facebook, where friends are the default), it does have a direct message (DM) feature for one-on-one chats. This potential new feature isn’t likely to replace that, but rather allow users to pick a tweet or set of tweets and use them as a jumping-off...

Bookended by Mark Zuckerberg, the keynote was used to share information about three key areas: Build, Grow, and Monetize. The overarching idea is that, now that Facebook has stabilized its platform, it’s investing in tools for developers to grow and make money with their apps. Here are the announcements that will help developers (and users) get the...

Skype today announced it is making group video calling (GVC) available free of charge on Windows desktop, OS X, and the Xbox One. At the same time, the company is also promising it will enable group video calling across all platforms at no cost “in the future.” We talked to Phillip Snalune, Skype’s General Manager of Consumer Product Marketing, to learn more, and he specifically listed apps for the following platforms: Windows modern (read: Metro app), Windows Phone, Android, and iOS. Unfortunately, he refused to share exact timing details. Snalune also wouldn’t disclose how much revenue the feature has generated...

Microsoft’s first Nokia ad uses a splash of color to show it’s ‘Not Like Everybody Else’

nokia

Nokia’s devices and services unit is now owned by Microsoft and to celebrate the company has released a new advert on YouTube. Sporting the tagline ‘Not Like Everybody Else’, it uses a track by English rock band The Kinks to highlight Nokia’s expertise in industrial design. In a street drained of color, one brightly dressed pedestrian grabs his yellow Lumia 1020, adorns a matching pair of headphones and strolls down the road – causing passersby to be paralyzed by sheer shock and awe. It’s a slick advert that embraces the position of the Windows Phone platform. Microsoft’s mobile OS is...

How Brewster Kahle is using open-source principles to build affordable housing for non-profit workers

26JdB_TNW_SRGB-0956

Brewster Kahle’s Internet Archive has been charting the Web’s evolution since 1996. Anyone wishing to return to the Yahoo of the mid-1990s or the Google of the early noughties merely has to punch the desired URL into the wonderful Wayback Machine, and boom. There it is, in all its (former) glory. But the Internet Archive is much more than a visual public record of the Web of yore. It provides permanent storage of, and free public access to, collections of digitized materials, including websites, music, moving images, and around three million books. Besides the gargantuan digital repository, however, Kahle was...

Twitter tests ‘Significant engagement’ notifications in its iOS app

Twitter Goes Public On The New York Stock Exchange

Twitter is testing a new feature called “Significant engagement” in its iOS app. The company describes these achievements as “Important or higher than usual engagement with your account or Tweets.” Not all iOS users have the new option in their Twitter settings, which explains why it’s not mentioned in the changelog on Apple’s App Store. Two staff members at TNW do, however, have the new option: The feature is on by default for these two individuals, but as you can see above, it can also be turned off. If you keep it on, however, you will start to get notifications...

Microsoft completes acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services business, price ‘slightly higher’ than $7.2B

As expected, Microsoft today announced the completed acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services business. Originally announced back in September, Nokia’s devices and services business was valued at €3.79 billion ($5 billion) and Microsoft also said it would spend a further €1.65 billion ($2.2 billion) to license Nokia’s patents — making the total cost €5.44 billion ($7.2 billion), to be paid in cash. Yet that price is not the final one: “The estimate of the adjustments made for net working capital and cash earnings was slightly positive for Nokia, and we currently expect the total transaction price to be slightly higher...

Facebook acquires activity-tracking app Moves, will keep it separate and promises not to ‘commingle data’

Facebook has acquired Moves, the iPhone and Android app that tracks your everyday life and exercise. In a blog post, the Finnish startup said it would be working on Facebook’s own products and services, but refrained from giving any specifics. If you’re a fan of Moves, fear not. The company said both the service would continue to exist as a standalone app. “There are no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook,” it added. Moves started out as an iPhone app that automatically tracked walking, running, cycling and other movements. The team released an Android version in September...

Following a ‘soft launch’ in a handful of US cities late last year, Wist is rolling out its personalized travel recommendations iPhone app globally from today. Less ‘cultural exchange’, more brass tacks. Though Wist was available in Miami only originally, it has since been rolled out to LA, Santa Monica, Boston, Chicago, Washington DC,...
