You can now opt out of Verizon Wireless’ relentless tracking program for real

Verizon Wireless is finally letting its customers opt out of its ad-targeting program that uses persistent, undeletable tracking codes on phones, reports The New York Times. The mobile carrier has been injecting users’ devices with ‘supercookies’ — also known as unique identifier headers (UIDH) — into its network traffic. It enables Verizon to capture information about your browsing history even if you’re using incognito mode which doesn’t allow standard cookies to be saved to your device. To disable header tracking, Verizon subscribers can call 1-866-211-0874 or visit the company’s site to opt out. The company said its systems will stop…

Watch: How tech giants turn their products into habits

eyal

It turns out that about 50 percent of what we do day-in, day-out is done with little or no conscious thought. Some companies have succeeded in turning this behavior into habit. Every time we are unsure about something, we Google it. When we feel sad, we check our Facebook account. When we want to capture a moment in time, we use Instagram. What do all those companies that succeeded to create a habit out of using their products have in common? We’ve just added Nir Eyal’s talk at last year’s TNW Europe Conference to our TNW Video site and you…

Amazon Cloud Drive now offers unlimited storage for photos and files

Amazon is today adding a couple of new storage tiers for its Cloud Drive customers with a heck of a lot of files and photos. The Unlimited Photos Plan is… what it sounds like. You can upload an ‘infinite’ amount of photos for $11.99 per year. For files, it includes 5GB of storage, which means this plan is only really useful if you primarily use the cloud to save your old pictures. For everyone else, there’s the Unlimited Everything Plan, which is also just what it sounds like – store anything you can upload for $59.99 per year. It’s a…

Brendan Lyall is the CEO of Grow Mobile The news that Nintendo and DeNA have partnered to produce mobile games together has led to a glut of articles, think pieces and speculative lists about what the future holds. Google adds product ratings to shopping searches in Europe

Google added product ratings to search ads in the US last summer. Now it’s bringing them to Europe, starting with the UK, France and Germany. The ratings show up as stars and review counts on Product Listing Ads. The five-star rating system is based on aggregated review data compiled from multiple sources including merchants’ sites, third-party aggregators, editorial sites and users. Google says it believes the product ratings “help consumers make better purchase decisions before they click” and “[drive] more qualified traffic to participating merchants.” Critics will point to the further blurring of lines between organic search results and paid…

You can click the extension button on your browser toolbar to see how much data it has saved you and turn it off if necessary. The feature is also available in Chrome on Android…

Here’s a video of a CD shattering at 170,600 FPS because why not

Back in January, the Slow Mo guys showed us what a DSLR’s mirror and shutter mechanism looked like at 10,000 fps. It was pretty awesome. Today’s video is much less educational, but just as cool, if not more so. The duo took a CD, spun it around at 23,000 rotations per minute, and then filmed it shattering at 170,600 frames per second. That’s a lot of frames. The camera recorded for just about 4 seconds, but watching the whole recording at a reasonable 24fps would take nearly 8 hours, amounting to 96GB of data. You can see just about every…

Crowdfunding platforms have helped launch many a product, but what happens to campaigns after they’re over? Kickstarter wants to keep you coming to its site with a new feature called Spotlight. Rather than remain a relic of a product’s pre-funded past, pages for successfully funded campaigns can now be converted into full-on product showcases. This includes a number of editing tools, allowing you to use a large featured background image, add direct buy links or show off a timeline of a product’s past and future. Of course, most successfully funded projects have dedicated homepages of their own, but a lot…

Facebook introduces an embedded video player

fb embed video

At its F8 conference today, Facebook announced it is introducing a video player that can be embedded onto other sites – finally. Previously, pretty much the only way to share a video hosted on Facebook was to link to Facebook page or share it through the platform itself – quite inconvenient if you just want to post a relevant video on a blog or website. The change is part of a greater shift towards improving the video experience on Facebook, and taking YouTube on more seriously. The company recently introduced revamped video sections for pages to highlight content on business…
