Fantastical for iOS now lets you snooze calendar reminders

Fantastical finally launched its uber-popular calendar app for iPad back in April, 18 months after it first arrived for iPhone. And today, Fantastical is rolling out a slew of updates to both versions. Among the updates for version 2.1 is a new snooze function that enables you to pause a calendar event for a specified period of time, which is useful for when you don’t quite have enough time to do something ‘now’. Additionally, you can also now search and add contacts or locations at the moment you create a new event, the latter of which can be achieved by...

Dropbox for Business updated with password-protected link sharing, expiration dates and more

dropbox

Dropbox has announced a number of product updates aimed at its small and medium-sized enterprise (SMEs) customers, including a much-requested option for full-text search within documents. Announced today, the update brings a number of new features to the platform for business users, including an option for setting passwords and/or an expiration date for shared links, which the company says further enhances the security for teams working on collaborative projects and frequently sharing documents. This also works retrospectively if you update previously shared documents with an expiration date or password. The minimum period for expiration dates is one day (rather than...

FiftyThree_Pencil_Drawing_1-798x310

FiftyThree wants to make Pencil, its stylish Bluetooth Low Energy stylus for the iPad, more useful. Some of its best features, such as Palm Rejection, Erase and Blend, only work with the official Paper app – but now, a FiftyThree SDK is available so that developers can implement these same features in their own apps. To coincide with the release, FiftyThree has teamed up with three launch partners. Procreate, a digital art and illustration app that won an Apple Design Award last year, has combined core Pencil features – Paint, Smudge and Erase – into a new creative tool for...

Premium not freemium: Fleksy follows in SwiftKey’s footsteps with a new store for themes

Fleksy 3.0 - Ocean Blue

Fleksy’s regular Android updates continues today with the news that the smart keyboard app is getting a general design refresh alongside a brand new Fleksy Store for premium content. This move mimics a similar shift in focus by SwiftKey back in June, when it too launched a store for premium themes. Except with SwiftKey, it also ditched its hitherto paid app to go completely free, thus relying entirely on in-app purchases to generate revenue through its flagship Android app. In Fleksy’s case, however, it shall continue to adopt its usual 30-day trial period, followed by a mandatory $3.99 upgrade if...

Sense is a bedside gadget for monitoring and improving your sleep

sense

James Proud, a graduate of the first class of the Thiel Fellowship, has launched his new startup, Hello, on Kickstarter with Sense, a gadget that sits on your nightstand and monitors your sleeping environment. The device includes motion, light, temperature, humidity, noise and air quality sensors in order to understand your environment. Its design reminds me of a miniature version of the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, affectionately called the Bird’s Nest. Sense also combines with a “sleep pill” that clips to your pillowcase to provide more specific data about your sleep cycle. Sleep trackers are nothing new, with multiple startups...

William Shatner reviews Facebook’s new Mentions celebrity app and finds it ‘ill-conceived’

When you were a kid watching William Shatner/Captain Kirk charm his way through the galaxy, did you ever wonder what the future would look like? Well, that future is here, and it includes Shatner reviewing a Facebook app on his new Yahoo-owned Tumblr page. Normally, we’d be posting our own review, but Facebook’s new Mentions app is only for “actors, athletes, musicians” and other public figures. Thankfully, Shatner considers himself “in the best position to compare” Mentions to the existing Facebook and Facebook Pages apps. Of course, there’s always the possibility that Shatner’s social media manager ghost-wrote this, but the...

Tinder co-founder’s ‘Next’ iPhone app has you swiping to discover new indie musicians

record

Music discovery is a problem, especially for independent artists that don’t have a massive marketing machine backing them. In many ways, finding an artist that you connect with is a lot like starting a relationship, so it’s only natural that two Tinder veterans would take the same discovery dynamic that has worked for dating and hookups and apply it to musicians and their fans. The resulting iPhone app, which is created by Tinder co-founder Christopher Gulczynski and former VP of design Sarah Mick, is called Next. Musicians use Next to record short videos of their music – anywhere from 10...
