Twitter has acquired Whetlab, a machine learning firm. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Currently, Twitter is only saying Whetlab will “accelerate” its machine learning efforts. Twitter didn’t offer specifics on what machine learning inititatives it would be using Whetlab for, but analytics is a safe bet.

Twitter uses machine learning for Hadoop-based analytics, and Whetlab provided a similar service to its clients ahead of this acquisition. Whetlab will end its closed beta program for clients on July 15.

Via its website, Whetlab says “Twitter is the platform for open communication on the internet and we believe that Whetlab’s technology can have a huge and positive impact through it.”

We’ve reached out to Twitter for details on the acquisition, and will update if we hear back.
