It’s about time: September ticks over with another smartwatch explosion

SWITZERLAND-BUSINESS-TRADE-WATCHES-LUXURY

As folks come back from their August vacations, September is poised for another rapid-fire batch of consumer electronics announcements. Samsung, Sony, Motorola and Apple all have major launches scheduled in the next couple weeks, not to mention the IFA show. New smartwatch products are expected at many of those events. Last September was supposed to kick off the smartwatch revolution. In a single day, we saw Sony launch its Smartwatch 2, Samsung release the Galaxy Gear, and Qualcomm announce the Toq. None of those have really taken off over the past year. After being disappointed by the Galaxy Gear and...

Twitter’s new onboarding flow still ignores what makes it such a special place

Twitter_hq_4

This week, Twitter rolled out an overhauled onboarding experience for new users of the social network. We previously ran the old one through its paces and thought that the experience showed why the company is struggling to grow, but does this new one fare any better? We signed up for a new account to find out. The signup screen the company uses is still the same as before; it still recommends awful usernames like @6wzSZN1Cyuj6gpZ, which I chose for my shiny new account. The step after this is where the new onboarding wizard starts. On the old wizard, you were...

YouTube now lets you queue videos on the Web to send to Chromecast

Following its recent facelift, YouTube today began rolling out a new queuing feature for sharing videos to Chromecast from your computer. Google expects the updates to arrive for all users by early next week. With the new changes, you’ll be able to use a single tab to cast a video and then continue browsing to line up more to watch. You’ll also be able to cast playlists. YouTube has also confirmed updates we noticed earlier in the day that unify the design of the Add to Playlist and Share buttons on the desktop with the mobile apps. The company has...

Guided by Chromecast: The power to shape viewing habits

Launching initially in the US back in July 2013, Google finally took Chromecast global in March, arriving in Canada, the UK and nine other European countries. The HDMI TV streaming dongle has been a revelation on many fronts, chiefly because it makes it insanely easy to consume mobile and Web-based content on your big screen, and it does so at a ridiculously cheap pricepoint too. US consumers can snap one up for around $34.99, while I paid around £30 for it in the UK, though that is now dropping below the £20 threshold in some retailers, which is insane really....

Nintendo unveils ‘new’ 3DS and 3DS LL video game consoles, coming to Japan on October 11

Nintendo is maintaining its tradition of slowly developing handheld gaming consoles with lighter, sleeker and more powerful redesigns. Today, the Japanese company announced two new 3DS models, simply called the “new” 3DS and “new” 3DS LL. Each unit is a little larger and lighter than its predecessor, and features a small nub called the “C-stick” that sits on the right-hand side. It’s not a true analog stick, or even another Circle Pad for that matter; instead it’s a tiny pad that harkens back to the old pointer nubs found on laptop trackpads. It looks a little awkward, but should prove...

Google today stopped showing authorship in search results, meaning articles will no longer include a link to the Google+ profile of their author. The company explains that it found the information isn’t as useful to our users as it hoped, and in some cases even distracts from the overall search results. In June, Google removed authors’ Google+ profile pictures from search results. That might sound like a nihilistic newspaper headline from the day before Skynet woke up and bombed us, but it’s actually pretty far from that. Leaving more control in the hands of machines is not only something we cannot stop, but something we shouldn’t stop. Instagram hopes to launch Hyperlapse for Android ‘soon’ despite low-level APIs not available on the platform

Facebook’s Instagram today released Hyperlapse for iOS, a new mobile app that lets iPhone owners record tracking shots and time-lapse videos. The app isn’t launching on Google’s mobile platform today (or even later this week) because the necessary APIs simply aren’t available. “Android is an important platform for us, so we really want to bring Hyperlapse to it,” an Instagram spokesperson told TNW. “Unfortunately, the requisite APIs are not currently available on Android. More specifically, low-level APIs to access the gyroscope and camera frames.” When I pushed for a definitive answer, however, here’s the official stance I was given: “we...

One of the pieces of advice I hear regularly for startup founders looking for a business idea is to find a problem they’re experiencing and set out to solve it. It’s excellent advice – some of the best companies have been built on that premise – but it also has an enormous blindspot.
